LAUNDRY!!!!!
We all have it on our to-do list. However, doing laundry here is a little different than there.
In our apt pictures we posted a picture of our washing machine. It will hold 2-3 pair of slacks/jeans (depending on the weight of the pants), 4 button or t-shirts or a combination thereof, 6-8 socks and 3 pair of underwear. That makes a full load. It takes 57 minutes to do a load you then take them out and put in the dryer! NOT!!!! Dryers do exist here. Some of the well to dos have dryers but you must get them from a larger city. To dry clothes they make special ceiling installed devices which consist of two metal bars suspended from the ceiling with wires attached (pictures are on our picture page), you move the bars up and down with an interchangeable handle. There are holes on some of the bars where you can place plastic hangers with the clothes on them. These are usually attached to the ceiling in a sunny location. If that happens to be your living room well no biggy. We have a laundry room (see picture site – apt pics). We have purchased a stand up fan which we then place at the entrance to the laundry room and open the back window about 1 ½” this allows the air to flow. Drying a load of clothes takes about 8-10 hours this way. I have a load of laundry in the machine by 6:30 most mornings so it is washed and hung before I leave the house at 8:15 for class. Our bed linens here are a bit different. The bottom sheet for us is sort of like a large flat sheet that also serves as a dust ruffle thing. The top is a duvet cover in which we have placed a light weight down comforter. Fitted sheets are not available. We are told you can get them in KMG a larger city. Lots of things are available there but not here. Most people do their laundry as in the picture to the right of this article. I see this lady EVERY morning as I head out to school doing just as she is in this picture. The other pictures are of various ways to dry laundry. All of these pictures were taken within 2 blocks of our apartment. Just think about it, you do your laundry then hang it outside in the dusty, dirty air to dry!!!
As you go about laundry this week, or any week, think about these people and how they struggle and count your blessings.
