Buying veggies

When we go to the store to buy vegetables, we shop a little differently than we did back home. Our vegetable lady has become a really good friend. She always smiles and give us very good prices. Good Prices? Yes, there are no prices on anything that you buy here, so you are at the mercy of the shop owner when it comes to setting prices. The vegetable man right across the street (25 feet away) from her always charges us much higher prices. It’s a “skin tax” so to speak. Anyway, she is always fair to us.
You can see her entire stand in the picture. It is located literally on the street. We always bought the things that she sold, especially the eggs. You can see them in the middle of the table. We always bought six eggs at a time. Yep, the eggs are not refrigerated. No eggs in this country are. Even on the hottest days, eggs are sold just like that all over this town.
She goes to the big market every morning around 5:30a.m. and buys the vegetables that she thinks that she will need for the day. Her stuff is always fresh that way. We loved supporting her and stopping in to “chat”. She speaks no English, and as our Chinese got better, we could have little talks. It was a big day when she invited us to sit down and talk. That meant that we had finally been accepted on our little street.
So, when you go to the store this week. Compare your vegetable isle with our little stand. I bet our stuff is the freshest. Oh, the fruit guy was up the street. We shopped at his place nearly all of the time too.
