To Whitehorse and around town, a set on Flickr.
WHITEHORSE, YUKON
Well, if you are a Facebooker, you know that we had a slight problem with the trailer’s stabilizer jacks, yesterday, as we prepared to leave Watson Lake. One of the stabilizer arms ended up having bent support arms and a broken wire to the motor. Which happened first is hard to tell. The stabilizer is supposed to come up first when the trailer is automatically retracting all of the jacks, but it didn’t. There are 4 jacks plus the stabilizer. I took off the bent braces, straightened them out, and put them back on. Then, I hand cranked (not hard to do) the stabilizer back up, and off we went. The rest was routine. I fixed the broken wire to the motor when we got to Whitehorse, and the motor works so everything is back to near normal.
We saw a grizzly bear on the drive. Later, we saw a camper stopped up ahead of us, and there was a small bear lying beside the road. We didn’t stop for it.
The road was very good and we made good time. Big scenery was the rule and we took lots of pictures. We did stop at the continental divide and took a few more pictures. Amazingly, the 2 streams draining both sides of the divide were really full (bank to bank) within just a mile or so of the top of the divide.
Whitehorse is a pretty town. The population is about 25,000 which is 2/3rds of the entire population of the Yukon. That doesn’t leave too many people to live out in the bush. It’s a big territory with not a lot of people in it.
The city is very picturesque and sits on the Yukon River. We took some pictures downtown. We hit the Wally-World, ate a donut at Tim Hortons, and walked around town. Pure tourist stuff. We also took a day off from traveling and spent part of the day loafing around the trailer.
One of the sights that we saw was a restored DC-3 up on a pedestal at the airport which is really a windsock. It moved around as the wind shifted when we were watching it. Cool! If you have watched Ice Pilots on the Weather Channel, the owner of the airline has flown this particular aircraft. Check it out on the web.
That’s all for now. Take care and be safe.
