BACKING UP PRACTICE

How to back a tourist bus onto a city street?

Sounds relatively easy for us, you just stop traffic and allow the bus to back out no big problem. However, here it happened a bit differently. I actually observed this last week. It was a hoot to watch and I wanted to share it with everyone.
Try to envision this as you read it but.
First, a person stands behind the left side of the bus where the driver can see him. The bus backs up about 6” and is told to stop, car going by. Driver motioned to come on back, but wait—two people are walking across the street in the path of the bus. Driver motioned to start again, this time to be stopped because there are two bicycles going by. Come on back the looker motions, however he puts up the halt sign there is an older couple walking in the street with a baby stroller. Okay to start again he motions, but this time after less than one foot of movement, the bus is again told to stop. There are about 6 taxis on the street who are honking their horns, they want through. By this time the bus has the back wheels on to the street and there is maybe room for a car to squeeze by in one direction. Driver is motioned on back, but you guessed it, he is stopped again because there is a car coming each direction and they want through and they make it, just barely, with the assistance of the person assisting the bus onto the street. Backing up again this time to be stopped because there are about 6 students who are raising a ruckus, they need to get by. School will be starting in 5 minutes and they will be late and need to go the other 2 blocks and in the gate. Okay to start again, the bus actually gets more than 2/3 on the street and another group of taxis need by. They drive on the sidewalk to make it through the space. This process continues for about 15 minutes. The last thing to pass by is a police car. The policeman stops the car and rather rudely talks to the person assisting the driver. I have no idea what he said but by the tone I would guess that if it happened in the US he would be getting a chewing out.
Just thought I would give you a bit of food for thought. Hope you enjoyed reading. Be thankful you are in a place where there are some rules or at least guidelines.
