WHY or WHY NOT

Things here are just not what the "normal" American would consider normal. When we first got here, we took lots of pictures of everything. You see, everything was odd, out of place or just plain funny. Now, we do not take so many pictures, because only the extremely odd catches our eye. Even then, a roll of the eyes or just a shrug of the shoulders may be all that would indicate that said event was even mildly out of place to us. Make no mistake, it would definitely get your attention as not "normal", but in this culture, it's the way the world turns.
Let's see: 5 people on a small motorcycle - 3 is the limit but 4 is not uncommon; people standing up on the back carrier of a bike while another person rides the bike down the street; a san-lun che (three wheeled bike with small truck bed) with at least a 40 foot section of heavy iron pipe going down the middle of the street; a very old woman pushing her older husband in a wheel chair right down the middle of the street; kids(from birth to just under puberty) of both sexes going to the bathroom right on the sidewalk; 200-300 ducks being herded down the middle of a major highway; a herd of water buffalo going down the same road in a blind curve; a man parks his car right in the middle of the street and saunters back off the street into a housing complex; cars, motorcycles, bikes, and all kinds of wheeled vehicles parked in the middle of the road; a really old man peddling his san-lun che through a busy intersection at the speed of molasses in January-horns blaring but he is totally unconcerned. The list goes on and on.
America had about 40 years(1910's-1950) to fully transition from the horse and buggy age to the age of interstate travel. Here, outside of the major cities, they have been transitioning from dirt paths to interstates in as few as 8-10 years and have really not made the jump. The guy with the ducks on the blacktopped highway is just doing what his grandfather did on the dirt path that has now become a highway. You have to move those ducks every day. It's just what he knows; he sees no difference. Life goes on so to speak.
So, when you think you have seen everything, just imagine some of the sights that we've seen, make a mental note of yours and we will compare pictures when we get back. You will ask, "Why's he doing that?" He would answer, "Why Not?" It will be a HOOT!
